Phillip Nelson Read Sr., 86, of Hookstown (Hanover Twp.), died unexpectedly Friday afternoon, July 26, 2019, in the comfort of his home.

Born November 21, 1932, in Washington, Pa., he was the last surviving child born to the late Charles L. and Mildred (Frazier) Read.

He was a retired supervisor having worked for Hanover Twp. A veteran of World War II, he had served in the U.S. Navy.  He was a member of the Hookstown American Legion Post #0952 and was an avid supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and many other children’s charities. Continue reading →

William J. Morrow Jr., 74, of Shippingport, died Wednesday, July 24, 2019, in the comfort of his home with his children at his side.

Born April 26, 1945 in East Liverpool, Ohio, he was the only child of the late William J. Sr. and Ila Maud (Nelson) Morrow.

William was a Power Plant Supervisor and retired in 2000 from AES in Monaca. Continue reading →

Robert A. Burris, 92, of Burgettstown (Hanover Twp.), died Friday afternoon, July 12, 2019, at Brighton Wellness and Rehabilitation Center, Brighton Twp.

Born February 2, 1927, in Washington, Pa., son of the late William and Sadie (Allen) Burris, he worked as a farmer in the agricultural industry and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a PFC during World War II. William Thomas ‘Buddy’ Gray, 62, of Georgetown, (Hanover Twp.) died Monday afternoon July 8, 2019, in the Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Born February 16, 1957, in Waynesburg, the son of the late William Eugene and Claire (Sweeney) Gray Rogers. Buddy had worked as a taxidermist and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Continue reading →

Sandy DeBacco, 80, of Hookstown (Greene twp.) died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, July 6, 2019, in the comfort of his home.

Born October 18, 1938, in West Aliquippa, he was a son of the late Frank and Virginia (Mancini) DeBacco. He was a retired steel worker of 46 years having worked at LTV Steel Aliquippa and a coach and former president of Hanover Youth Baseball. He was also a member of Frankfort Springs Council. Sandy was so very proud of his 46 years at LTV steel and the friendships he made there. Most important to him was his family, his strong love for all of them was evident in how he lived. Sarah R. (Becky) Scarbro 98, a resident of the Orchards at Foxcrest, Chester, W.V. since 2007 passed from this life to be present with her Lord and Savior on May 25, 2019.

She was the third daughter of the late Mont R. and Anna (Shay) McCoy, born May 31, 1920 in Raccoon twp. Beaver County. Becky attended the Crooks and Lower Service one room schools. She graduated from the Aliquippa High School and the Sewickley Hospital School of Nursing. She continued her nursing profession in Florida and Mississippi, while in Biloxi Mississippi she met and married her husband Frank Scarbro and they later moved to Denver Colorado in 1962. Tom Smitsky Jr., 79, of Hookstown (Hanover Twp.) passed peacefully Friday morning, May 17, 2019, in the comfort of his home.

Born June 1, 1939, in Bavington, he was the last surviving child born to the late Tom and Rose (Dragnet) Smitsky. He had worked in the construction industry as a laborer, belonging to Local #833, New Brighton. Continue reading →

Blaine W. Mott, 89, of Hookstown died Tuesday evening, April 30, 2019, in the comfort of his home, surround by the love of his family.

Born February 1 1930, in New Brighton, the last surviving son born to the late George and Elaine (Healey) Mott.

He was one of the founding members of the Hookstown Volunteer Fire Dept. and was the former owner and operator of the Southside Garage. He was also a member of Glasgow Lodge 485 F&AM.

Ella M. Lewis, 81, of Hookstown, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2019, in East Liverpool City Hospital.

Born December 11, 1937, in Endicott, New York, she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Della (Hughes) Conklin. Ella worked for Andy’s Candies for 20 plus years and was a member of the Frankfort Presbyterian Church, Frankfort Springs.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Marvin, Kenny, Bobby, Cecil and Gary.

Surviving are her loving husband of 61 years, LeBaron “Barry” Lewis; a son, Greg (Sharon) Lewis, Verona, Pa.; daughter, Tammy (Don) Tokar, Saginaw, Texas; five grandchildren, Amanda and Nicole Lewis, Tiffany Condupa, Matthew Tokar, and Nicholas Thornton; and two sisters, Marlene Hartshorne, Allentown, Pa., and Della (Harry) Wood, Philipsburg, Pa. Michael Martinez, 59, of Clinton, died Sunday afternoon, March 3, 2019, at Brighton Wellness and Rehabilitation Center, Brighton Twp.

Born March 12, 1959, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Peter and Belia (Sixtos) Martinez. Before his illness he had worked as a chef in the food service industry.
