Lorna L. McHaffie – GEORGETOWN

Lorna L. McHaffie, 81, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 25, 2014, with family at her side.

She was born on May 26, 1932, in Langeloth, PA. She was the last remaining daughter of the late William Thomas and Orpha Leona (Hoover) Durst. She was a member of the Georgetown United Methodist Church. Continue reading

Becky S. Johnston – CHESTER, WV (FORMERLY OF HOOKSTOWN)

Becky S. Johnston, 41, of Chester, WV, died Friday evening, January 17, 2014, at Magee Women’s Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Born Sept. 29, 1972, in Steubenville, OH, she was the beloved daughter of Howard P. and Susan D. (Moore) Cain, Hookstown.  A homemaker, she loved playing cards, loved all children and enjoyed attending her children’s sporting events. Continue reading

Lewis W. Moore – HOOKSTOWN

Lewis W. Moore, 69, of Hookstown, died Christmas Day with his wife and family at his side at Good Samaritan Hospice Heritage Valley.

Born September 25, 1944, in East Liverpool, a son of the late Lawrence and Gladys (McDonald) Moore, he was a member of the Parish Family of St. Blaise, Midland. A steelworker, he worked at J&L Steel, Aliquippa Works, for 18 years, and more recently as a customer service agent with Toys R Us for 18 years. He loved gardening and belonged to the Canfield Pumpkin Association. He loved attending tractor pulls and most important to him was spending time with his grandchildren and family. Continue reading

Leslie E. Brown – HOOKSTOWN (FRANKFORT SPRINGS BORO)

Leslie E. Brown, 78, of Hookstown (Frankfort Springs, Boro), died peacefully on Monday afternoon, Dec. 23, 2013, at Heritage Valley Beaver, with his wife and family at his side.

Born April 19, 1935, in Eastville, PA, he was a son of the late Ellsworth and Fannie (Shade) Brown. Mr. Brown had worked as a well driller and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Shippingport Lodge F&AM where he also served as a PM and was a 32nd Degree Mason of the New Castle Consistory. He also loved gardening and fishing. Continue reading

Mary Anna ‘Jean’ Beers – ALIQUIPPA (HOPEWELL TWP.)

Mary Anna “Jean” Beers, 82, of Aliquippa (Hopewell Twp.), died Wednesday evening, December 4, 2013, in Rochester Manor.

Born December 20, 1930, in Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Fred F. and Ora R. (Hackworth) Ziegler. A homemaker, Mrs. Beers enjoyed sewing and was quite good at drawing and sketching.

Ruth (Whitehill) Hrizo, 75, formerly of Monroeville, died Monday afternoon, December 2, 2013, with family at her side, in Presbyterian Senior Care, Oakmont.

Born June 23, 1938, in Hookstown, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Clyde and Anna Elizabeth (Searight) Whitehill. Mrs. Hrizo had worked as a nurse in the health care profession at Magee-Women’s Hospital, and also taught nursing at Penn State. She had worked with the Malignant Hyperthermia Association and was a member of the Cross Roads Presbyterian Church of Monroeville. Continue reading

Charles Irvin Beers, 87, of Aliquippa (Hopewell Twp.), died Saturday morning, November 30, 2013, at Heritage Valley Beaver.

Born May 5, 1926, in Bellwood, PA, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Wilda Jane (Morrow) Beers. Mr. Beers had worked as a foreman at Armco Steel, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Infantry. He enjoyed collecting coins and trains. Continue reading

Dolores A. (Brodmerkel) Ross, 74, of Hookstown (Hanover Twp.), died Thursday afternoon, November 21, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian, with her family at her side, after a lengthy illness.

Born May 29, 1939, a daughter of the late Robert M. and Edith (Tarr) Brodmerkel, Dolores was a graduate of South Side High School, class of 1958 and had worked most recently at the Johnston Market in Hookstown, along with other numerous jobs throughout her lifetime. In addition to being a homemaker, Dolores was an extreme NASCAR fan who was particularly fond of Jeff Gordon. Continue reading

Thomas J. Davidson – FRANKFORT SPRINGS BORO

Thomas J. Davidson, 81, of Frankfort Springs Boro, died Wednesday evening, November 20, 2013, in the comfort of his home with his family at his side.

Born September 24, 1932, in Windsor Heights, WV, he was a son of the late Thomas and Caroline (Brooks) Davidson. Mr. Davidson was a retired diesel mechanic working at J&L Steel for 43 years. He attended the Aliquippa School District and was a member of the Hanover Presbyterian Church. He was co-owner of the Golfview Manor Nursing Home in Aliquippa and owner of the County Line Restaurant in Frankfort Springs. He was a member of the Monaca Center Lodge No. 791 F&AM, New Castle Consistory and the Pittsburgh Syria Shrine. He was also a former supervisor of Hanover Twp. Continue reading
