H. Duane Beal, 81, of Hookstown (Greene Twp.), died Tuesday evening, July 26, 2016, at Allegheny General Hospital, surrounded by his family. A loving husband, dad and pap . . . a loving person, loved his family and the outdoors greatly.

Born November 21, 1934, in Hanover Twp., he was the last surviving child born to the late John Herman and Clara (Swearingen) Beal. He was a retired steelworker with J&L, Aliquippa Works, and was a member of the Green Valley United Methodist Church, Shippingport. Continue reading

Joseph Wayne Johnston – ALIQUIPPA (RACCOON TWP.)

Joseph Wayne Johnston, 47, of Aliquippa (Raccoon Twp.), died peacefully Monday morning, July 25, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospice, Beaver, with his family at his side.

Born October 16, 1968, in Rochester, he was the beloved son of Patricia A. (Douglas) and her husband Joseph LeCerf of Aliquippa, and the late James Edward Johnston. He was a member of the Hookstown Free Methodist Church. Since graduating from New Horizon School in 1989, he has worked at the BCRC workshop in New Brighton for over 25 years, his favorite place to be except for coaching the Potter Raccoon Red Devils midget football team, where he was made head coach last year. Howard M. Hughes – MONACA (RACCOON TWP.)

Howard M. Hughes, 93, of Monaca (Raccoon Township), died Sunday morning, June 19, 2016, in the Evergreen Rehabilitation Center, Harmony.

Born Jan. 5, 1923, in Hookstown, he was the last surviving child born to the late Harry and Sarah (Morrow) Hughes. He was a retired fitter with U. S. Steel and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a Corporal during World War II. He was a member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, where along with being a caretaker of his church, he was also an Elder. He was a member of the Monaca American Legion, active Boy Scout leader, and he, along with his late wife, Helen, took in and worked with foster children serving as foster parents. Continue reading

Columbia E. Garren, 84, of Georgetown (Hanover Twp.), died Tuesday, May 31, 2016, in the comfort of her home, with family at her side.

Born in Georgetown on April 26, 1932, she was the last surviving child born to the late Raymond and Betty (Kline) Moralla. A homemaker, she was retired from Trinity Oaks, having worked as a night shift supervisor, and also had worked at the former Gimbel’s Department Store as a beautician and an electrolysis technician. Steven W. Streng Sr., 73, of Hookstown (Hanover Twp.), died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon, May 25, 2016, in the comfort of his home.

Born April 23, 1943, in Meyersdale, PA, he was a son of the late Arthur Franklin Streng Sr. and Osi Leona (Christener) Streng. A cement mason, he had worked in the construction industry for Local 526 for over 50 years. An avid motorcyclist and hunter, he enjoyed farming on his property and adored his grandchildren. Lillian F. Chleba, 94, of Beaver Falls (White Twp.), passed into eternity Friday evening, April 8, 2016, at Beaver Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with her family at her side.

Born July 8, 1921, in New Brighton, she was the last of three children born to the late Adrian W. and Mary (Morgan) McGee. A homemaker, she was a member of Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Church (now St. Monica’s Chippewa Site), a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart of the USA, holding offices on local and state levels, and was a volunteer at the Butler VA Hospital.
