Mae Phillis, 82, formerly of Raccoon Twp., died Friday evening, July 28, 2017, in the Brighton Wellness Center, Brighton Twp.

Born August 21, 1934, in Aliquippa, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur and Nettie (Gray) Keller. A homemaker, she attended the Community Bible Church of Aliquippa and was the retired Prothonotary of Beaver County having worked from 1996 until 1999. Continue reading

David G. ‘Skip’ Malcomb – East Liverpool

David G. “Skip” Malcomb, 55, of East Liverpool, died Tuesday evening, July 18, 2017, in UPMC Mercy, Pittsburgh, with family at his side.

Born in Aliquippa on December 13, 1961, beloved son of Lonnie (White) Malcomb, Aliquippa, and the late David D. “Buck” Malcomb, who died February 1, 2017. David was a member of Operating Engineers Local 66, most recently working at the Bruce Mansfield Plant, Shippingport. He was a member of the Shippingport Masonic Lodge No. 485 F&AM, and Sons of the Legion No. 952 Hookstown. He also enjoyed farming. Continue reading

Michael Arthur Connor – Formerly of Hookstown


Michael Arthur Connor, formerly of Hookstown, Pennsylvania, passed away at his residence in Goose Creek, S.C., on July 6, 2017.

He was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, on July 24, 1954, to Arthur “Red” Connor and the late Regina Theil Sluka. Michael attended and graduated from South Side Schools in Hookstown, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy in 1973, where he served for 24 years. During his Naval Career, he served on several submarines including the Nathan Hale, James Monroe, James K Polk, Von Steuben, and the Newport News as well as a year of recruiting duty in Findlay, Ohio, and 4 years at MEPS in Lansing, Michigan. At the time of retirement in 1998, he was a Machinist Mate (Chief). Continue reading

Mary H. Short – HOOKSTOWN (GREENE TWP.)

Mary H. Short, 90, of Hookstown (Greene Twp.), died Friday morning, June 30, 2017, in the comfort of her home, with family at her side.

Born on the Tate family farm in Hookstown on September 13, 1926, she was the last surviving child born to the late Ralph and Pansy (Davis) Tate. A homemaker, she was a member of the Green Valley United Methodist Church, Shippingport, and was the last surviving member of the Birthday Club (a group that was started by her and her girlfriends in their teen years). She was an avid yard sale shopper. She was a loving and committed caregiver to her late son, Donald, for almost 40 years until his death. Continue reading

Charles W. Garren, 88, of Georgetown (Hanover Twp.) died Sunday morning, June 18, 2017, in the comfort of his home.

Phyllis M. Reilly, 77, of Georgetown (Hanover Twp.) died unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, June 9, 2017, in the comfort of her home.

Born May 4, 1940, in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Julia (Keenan) Holmes. A homemaker, she was also a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church of Georgetown. Dr. Robert Wayne Kern – ALIQUIPPA (RACCOON TWP.)

Dr. Robert Wayne Kern passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017, and went to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born January 20, 1935, and reared by his parents in Bullskin Twp., Fayette County. As a child, many called him “Whitey” because of his blonde hair. At the age of fifteen, he accepted Jesus Christ into his heart. This gift from God and his choice to accept it, changed the entire course of his life.

As a hard-working young man, he caddied the golf course, hayed the summer fields, raised strawberries, and sold Bibles door-to-door. This provided the means for him to advance his education. He attended Bob Jones University. He graduated with both a BA in Bible and MA in Church Administration. Upon graduation, he remained there for five years on the administrative staff. His Alma Mater granted him an honorary doctorate degree in 1993 for his faithfulness to God and his work in the ministry at Community Bible Church, Aliquippa. Continue reading

Dorothy Maxine Hayward, 93, of Glenside, Pa., formerly of Hookstown, died Monday afternoon, May 29, 2017, at Wyncote Place, Wyncote, Pa.

Born May 18, 1924, in Chester, W.Va., she was the only child born to the late John Joseph and Emma Jeanette (Torrence) Craig. A homemaker, she was a member of the Green Valley United Methodist Church, Shippingport and had worked as a legal secretary and waitress and also had written columns for the East Liverpool Review. She served on numerous committees at her church and was a longtime member of the South Side School Board. Continue reading

In addition to being a homemaker, she was a retired payroll clerk having worked at the Crucible Steel Co., Midland, and was also a member of the Hookstown American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
