Emma Lou (Ewing) Hammond – Darlington Township

Emma Lou (Ewing) Hammond, 83, of Darlington Township, died Friday, July 8, 2022 at Heritage Valley Beaver.

Born October 7, 1938 at the family home on Green Garden Road in Raccoon Township, she was the daughter of the late Ross R. and Edna (Mitchell) Ewing. She graduated from Hopewell High School and went on to study at Pinkerton Business School.

Emma married the late H. Wayne Hammond on April 6, 1957. They were married 59 years until his death in 2016.

She worked throughout her life as a cashier, at Golden Dawn and later at the restaurant at Rogers Community Auction and Flea Market.

Emma was a lifelong member of the Grange and has been involved at the county, state and national levels. She attended the first ever Beaver County Junior Grange Camp as a child and later served on the camp committee. She belonged to several local Granges over the years, including Raccoon, South Beaver and most recently, the Fairview Grange, in Ohioville.

She enjoyed camping, cake decorating, candy making (caramels were her specialty), spending time with loved ones and playing cards. Her 80th birthday celebration was a girls’ weekend at a cabin in Seven Springs that was attended by more than 30 women.

Emma was an active member of three card clubs — the Hollow, Cannelton and Rogers clubs. She was known as the queen of the no trump bid.

Em knew how to feed a crowd and feed them well. Her handcrafted recipes, which often included nebulous but common-sense instructions, were typically written at a scale to feed a platoon of hungry soldiers. This trait lent itself well to running a catering business, which she did for several years, and being involved in various church, Grange and family dinners. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Darlington.

In addition to her husband, Emma was preceded in death by daughter Wendy Ebert; brothers Randy and Bob Ewing; and brothers-in-law Bill Baird and Bill Hammond.

She is survived by her sister Joanne Baird, of Center Township; children Cindy (Norm) Shaffer, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Tim (Lou Ann) Hammond, of South Beaver Township, and Tracy (Lonnie) Betts, of Lisbon, Ohio. Also surviving her are grandchildren Chelsea (Joe) Kmetz, Jenna Hammond, Ross Betts, Justin Betts and Travis (Kathy Sutton) Dunn; and great-grandchildren Hannah, Jackson and Carson Kmetz and Luke and Riley Betts.

Friends and family will be received Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at MCCONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 447 Pine St., Hookstown, PA 15050. Per Emma’s request, there will be a campfire with food at Fairview Grange, 6270 Tuscarawas Rd., Industry, PA 15052, after visitation on Tuesday.

Additional visitation will be held Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Hammond from Alabama, cousin of the late Wayne Hammond, will officiate. Interment will follow at John Anderson Cemetery, Service Creek Church, Raccoon Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church of Darlington, 3385 Old Darlington Rd., Darlington, PA 16115.
