Emma Lou (Ewing) Hammond – Darlington Township
Born October 7, 1938 at the family home on Green Garden Road in Raccoon Township, she was the daughter of the late Ross R. and Edna (Mitchell) Ewing. She graduated from Hopewell High School and went on to study at Pinkerton Business School.
Emma married the late H. Wayne Hammond on April 6, 1957. They were married 59 years until his death in 2016.
She worked throughout her life as a cashier, at Golden Dawn and later at the restaurant at Rogers Community Auction and Flea Market.
Emma was a lifelong member of the Grange and has been involved at the county, state and national levels. She attended the first ever Beaver County Junior Grange Camp as a child and later served on the camp committee. She belonged to several local Granges over the years, including Raccoon, South Beaver and most recently, the Fairview Grange, in Ohioville.
Emma was an active member of three card clubs — the Hollow, Cannelton and Rogers clubs. She was known as the queen of the no trump bid.
In addition to her husband, Emma was preceded in death by daughter Wendy Ebert; brothers Randy and Bob Ewing; and brothers-in-law Bill Baird and Bill Hammond.
She is survived by her sister Joanne Baird, of Center Township; children Cindy (Norm) Shaffer, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Tim (Lou Ann) Hammond, of South Beaver Township, and Tracy (Lonnie) Betts, of Lisbon, Ohio. Also surviving her are grandchildren Chelsea (Joe) Kmetz, Jenna Hammond, Ross Betts, Justin Betts and Travis (Kathy Sutton) Dunn; and great-grandchildren Hannah, Jackson and Carson Kmetz and Luke and Riley Betts.
Friends and family will be received Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at MCCONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 447 Pine St., Hookstown, PA 15050. Per Emma’s request, there will be a campfire with food at Fairview Grange, 6270 Tuscarawas Rd., Industry, PA 15052, after visitation on Tuesday.
Additional visitation will be held Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Hammond from Alabama, cousin of the late Wayne Hammond, will officiate. Interment will follow at John Anderson Cemetery, Service Creek Church, Raccoon Township.
