Diane (Kovacic) McHaffie – Georgetown

Diane (Kovacic) McHaffie, 63, of Georgetown, passed Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born, September 14, 1959, in Sewickley, PA, she was the daughter of the late Steve and Ann Kovacic.

She was a graduate of Aliquippa High School, Class of 1978. Diane furthered her education at the Community College of Beaver County, receiving her associate degree in Applied Sciences, Executive Secretary. Diane worked at Gateway Rehabilitation Center, Monaca, before becoming a flight attendant, where she flew for 33 years with US Airways and American Airlines, accumulating approximately 30,000 hours in the air.

Diane loved her two sons tremendously and she enjoyed watching them wrestle and play baseball. She prided herself in taking care of others and putting them first. Although she did not have any grandchildren, she was fondly known by family and friends as “Di Di” and loved and cared for many as if they were her own.

She was a member of Saint Augustine Parish, Saint Blaise Church in Midland. Diane married her husband Mickey 37 years ago on August 3, 1985. Together they raised two sons, Dr. Dylan McHaffie (Meaghan Melody) and Reese McHaffie (Dominique Pelayo).

She is survived by her siblings, George Petrejko of Clinton, Steve Kovacic (Angie Elfstrom) of Apple Valley, MN, James Kovacic (Laureen) of Erie, PA, and Maryann Polk of Glen Shaw, PA. She is also survived by her father-in-law, Dick McHaffie of Georgetown; sister-in-law, Kim Kovacic of Aliquippa; brother-in-laws, Larry Polk of Pittsburgh and Mark McHaffie (Michelle) of Chester, WV; nieces and nephews, Lynne Frederick, Stacy Kovacic, Zachary Polk (Dani), Marissa Polk, Marques McHaffie, John Steven Kovacic, David (Amanda), and Andrew Stromenger. Diane is also survived by her great nieces and nephew: Megan, Katie, Calysta, and Michael.

Diane was preceded in death by her brother, John Kovacic, and by her mother-in-law, Betty McHaffie.

The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the care givers and staff at Shadyside Hospital on the Transplant Unit 6 West and the Surgical ICU 4 West, who all went above and beyond what was expected as they cared for Diane and her family during her stay at Shadyside.

Family and friends are welcome to call at the MCCONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 447 Pine Street, Hookstown, PA 15050, on Sunday, March 12th from 1-3 P.M. and 5-7 P.M. and Monday, March 13th from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M., where prayers will be offered Tuesday at 9:00 A.M. followed by a mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. at St. Blaise Catholic Church, 772 Ohio Ave., Midland, PA 15059, Fr. Schreck will celebrate. She will be laid to rest at Mill Creek Hill Cemetery in Georgetown, PA.
