Charles A. Graham, 92 of Hookstown, passed Monday morning, January 20, 2025 in the comfort of his home with family at his side.

Born August 16, 1932 in Shippingport, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Edith (Hughes) Graham. Beloved father of Marlene and her husband Jon Caler, Edith and her husband Rick Mayhue, Helen and her husband Scott Mayhue, Keith and his wife Nina Graham, and daughter-in-law Freda Graham. Murray J. Hughes, 74 of Monaca (Raccoon Twp.) passed Wednesday afternoon, January 15, 2025 in the comfort of his home. Born January 21, 1950, he was a son of the late Murray Detmore and Lillie (Barker) Hughes. Edith M. Swearingen – Georgetown (Hanover twp.)

Edith M. Swearingen, 95 of Georgetown (Hanover twp.) passed peacefully Wednesday evening, January 8, 2025 with her children at her side at Heritage Valley Beaver. Born August 27, 1929 in Clinton, she was a daughter of the late Hunter and Nora (Marshall) Stephens. A homemaker, Edith was a lifetime member of the VFW ladies auxiliary; New Cumberland W.V. where she was a past president, secretary, and chaplain. Also, the past president of the state of W.V. M.O.C.A. and life member of veterans of foreign wars and a member of the National Home for Veterans. In her spare time, she enjoyed being outside enjoying God’s beauty gardening. Continue reading

Doris M. Cox – Hookstown

Doris M. Cox, 84 of Hookstown passed peacefully, Tuesday afternoon, January 7, 2025 at Beaver Valley Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Chippewa with family at her side. Born October 29, 1940 in Aliquippa, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Emma (Hess) Kane.

Doris was a very active member of the Hookstown Free Methodist Church, often giving her time to prepare funeral meals. She was a graduate of South Side School class of 1960. She had worked as a housekeeper for over 30 years at the Willows in Industry, a member of the South Side Senior Citizens, she enjoyed bingo and the Red Hats Ladies group. Continue reading

Joyce J. Kostandin – Beaver Falls (South Beaver Twp.))

With sad and heavy hearts, we announce the tragic passing of our beloved mother, daughter and sister, Joyce J. Kostandin on December 31, 2024. Born December 16, 1983 in Beaver, she was the daughter of Cindy (Backus) Beck and the late Terry Beck. Joyce had worked at Heritage Valley Beaver as a phlebotomist. A very creative person, she loved working on and remodeling her home and working on crafts.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her sons, Gavin and Landon Kostandin, her brother Roy L. Pape Jr. and her sisters Terri Smitsky and Elizabeth and her husband Joe Shelton. Her nieces and nephews are Ainsley Pape, Micah & Lucah Pape, Tallylynn and Paige Smitsky, Cheyenne Shelton and the late Wyatt Smitsky. Also, her beloved fur baby, Tobias. Continue reading

James “Jamie” Laughlin Jr. – Cincinnati, OH

James “Jamie” Laughlin Jr., 56, of Cincinnati, OH, formerly of Hookstown, passed away unexpectedly on December 11, 2024. He was the beloved son of James and Donna (Rogers) Laughlin of Greene Township.

Jamie always had a love for science and service and his vocation path into education was no surprise. Most recently he was a teacher for 16 years in the chemistry department at Saint Xavier High School in Cincinnati. He took pride in all of his students. Donald G. Gardner – Shippingport

Donald G. Gardner, 95, passed from this world peacefully on November 23, 2024 in his home at Apple Blossom Senior Living, where he had resided for the past three years.

He was born on January 12, 1929 in Rochester to the late Carl and Irene (Cotter) Gardner.

He graduated from Lincoln High School in Midland in 1946 and furthered his education at Geneva College, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. Continue reading

Daniel J. Frederick – Hookstown (Hanover twp.)

Daniel J. Frederick, 68 of Hookstown (Hanover twp.) formerly of Carnegie and Port Allegany passed Saturday evening, November 9, 2024 at UPMC Passavant, North Hills surrounded by his beloved family. Born December 11, 1955, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late John P. and Esther (Bowman) Frederick. Dan worked as maintenance in the glass manufacturing industry. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of the South Side Sportsman Club and Roulette Fish and Game Club. Dan was a man who appreciated being surrounded by nature and it’s beauty, while spending time at his camp with family and friends. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church of New Cumberland West Virginia.

He was the beloved husband of 43 years to Jan E. (Merritt) Frederick. Dearest father of Jonathan and his wife Bre Frederick, Daniel and his wife Jess Frederick, and Kelly and her husband Jared O’Neill. Brother of Patricia and her husband Nelson Rhodus. Proud grandfather of 4, Nora, Hank, Wyatt, and Leila. Proceeded in death by his brother John and Sister-in-law Norma Frederick. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Continue reading

Lanny M. Winters, 77 of Hookstown (Greene Twp.) passed peacefully, Wednesday morning, November 6, 2024 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.

Born August 17, 1947 in Rochester. He was a son of the late James M. and Beulah (Scott) Winters. He worked at First Energy Nuclear Power Plant in Shippingport. He was a member of the Hookstown American Legion, a veteran, serving as a Sgt. in the National Guard, and attended the Hookstown Free Methodist Church. Continue reading

Harold C. Gareis – Georgetown (Hanover Twp.)

Harold C. Gareis, 96 of Georgetown (Hanover Twp.) passed peacefully Monday evening, October 28, 2024 with his children at his side at Heritage Valley Beaver. Born April 25, 1928 in Burgettstown, he was a son of the late Earl and Rose (Rotta) Gareis. He was a veteran of the US Army and was a retired steel worker at Weirton Steel. He enjoyed Farming, hunting but most of all, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Marie (Wilkinson) Gareis, 4 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by his daughter Rosalie and her husband Ken Mihalcin and a son Ken Gareis. Grandfather of two, Adam and his wife Emmi Mihalcin and Kelsey and her husband Bryan Zilka. His two great grandchildren are Charlotte and Lauren. Brother of June McKitrick and her late husband Richard, Larry Gareis and his wife Judy and Barbara Ann Spinella and her late husband Tom.
